M.Sc. (Ag.) Plant Pathology

Plant pathology is the scientific study of diseases in plants caused by pathogens (such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, and parasitic plants) and environmental factors (such as weather conditions, soil conditions, and pollutants). It encompasses the understanding of the causes, mechanisms, interactions, and management strategies of plant diseases. Plant pathology research encompasses various disciplines, including molecular biology, genetics, epidemiology, ecology, and bioinformatics. Learners will study the mechanisms of pathogen infection, host-pathogen interactions, genetic resistance, disease epidemiology, and the development of sustainable disease management practices. Plant pathology plays a crucial role in safeguarding global food security by mitigating the impact of plant diseases on crop production and ecosystem health.

Eligibility

The future prospects of plant pathology are promising, driven by technological advancements, emerging challenges in agriculture, and the need for sustainable solutions. Continued advancements in molecular biology and genetics will enable researchers to gain deeper insights into the molecular mechanisms of plant-pathogen interactions.

  • Government Sectors: Many Government opportunities exist for plant pathology professionals. In the govt. sector, state agriculture departments recruit them at Officer level posts. Government Banks also hire them to fill up Officer level posts (that primarily deals with Agriculture related loans). They also have job avenues as Plant Protection officer in Central or State govt, Farm managers/supervisors, technical officer/assistant.
  • Private sectors: Jobs opportunities are as managers at plantations, as officers at fertilizer manufacturing firms, agriculture machinery industries, agricultural products marketing firms, food processing firms etc.
  • Academics/Research: Post graduates can pursue career in research/extension and work as Lecturers.
  • Entrepreneurship : Self-Employment for establishment of agriculture based stratups.

Program objectives:

  • The subject revolves around the scientific study of agriculture. This will help to improve the quality of the yield and will also increase the production rate.
  • The course also provides an integrated understanding of economic and social considerations in the agricultural systems.
  • To develop a good teaching-learning environment for higher studies and help in selection of professional careers in government and private organization, agro-based industries, educational/ research/extension, institutes etc.
  • The students will get excellent job offers in areas like Agriculture/Dairy Industries, Fertilizer Industries, and Food Processing Units
